*Please note: For this book club, the author will not be in attendance. This book club is an opportunity for our community to discuss books together in a casual and welcoming environment.

Join us for our brand new, in-person book club - Branch Out Book Club - which will be meeting on the last Monday of the month (unless otherwise noted) at 6:30pm at Titcomb's Bookshop. For the month of April, in celebration of National Poetry Month, we will be discussing Poetry Unbound: 50 Poems to Open Your World by Pádraig Ó Tuama. This is a powerful anthology of 50 poems by 50 different poets with short reflections and meditations about each poem. "This is a valuable introduction to poetry for those just familiarizing themselves with the form, and a timely way to renew and deepen that appreciation for seasoned readers." - Publishers Weekly

Poetry Unbound is a hardcover book, so we are providing a 20% discount for the month of April for book club attendees!

ABOUT BRANCH OUT BOOK CLUB

We are interested in reading and discussing books of various genres (mixing it up each month) featuring diverse voices. We invite folks to try reading genres that you might not typically read! From poetry to fantasy, romance to horror, sci-fi to nonfiction!

This book club offers a casual and welcoming environment for our community to read together and to share thoughts and reflections together, hosted by Titcomb's Bookshop booksellers Caleb & Meghan.

Meghan says: We chose Poetry Unbound to start off our new book club as an invitation for readers to come as they are! Read the whole book cover to cover, or graze and read what strikes you! This is a book that is looking at the power and diversity of art, so even if poetry isn't necessarily your favorite thing to read, please join us for our discussion! We would love to meet you and share together!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Expanding on the popular podcast of the same name from On Being Studios, Poetry Unbound offers immersive reflections on fifty powerful poems.

In the tumult of our contemporary moment, poetry has emerged as an inviting, consoling outlet with a unique power to move and connect us, to inspire fury, tears, joy, laughter, and surprise. This generous anthology pairs fifty illuminating poems with poet and podcast host Pádraig Ó Tuama’s appealing, unhurried reflections. With keen insight and warm personal anecdotes, Ó Tuama considers each poem’s artistry and explores how its meaning can reach into our own lives.

Focusing mainly on poets writing today, Ó Tuama engages with a diverse array of voices that includes Ada Limón, Ilya Kaminsky, Margaret Atwood, Ocean Vuong, Layli Long Soldier, and Reginald Dwayne Betts. Natasha Trethewey meditates on miscegenation and Mississippi; Raymond Antrobus makes poetry out of the questions shot at him by an immigration officer; Martín Espada mourns his father; Marie Howe remembers and blesses her mother’s body; Aimee Nezhukumatathil offers comfort to her child-self. Through these wide-ranging poems, Ó Tuama guides us on an inspiring journey to reckon with self-acceptance, history, independence, parenthood, identity, joy, and resilience.

For anyone who has wanted to try their hand at a conversation with poetry but doesn’t know where to start, Poetry Unbound presents a window through which to celebrate the art of being alive.
