Wednesday May 21st, 4:30-5:30pm

Come learn more about the tradition of Cape League baseball.

The entire student population of Sandwich High School will be reading The Last Best League over the summer. This is a good opportunity for others in the community to learn more about the book.

Sloop by Daniel Robb
Book Signing and Boat Display
Celebrate Maritime Days on Cape Cod
Saturday May 24th, 3-4pm

When Daniel Robb set out to rebuild a family sailboat that had been deteriorating for years, he couldn't have anticipated what he was getting into. Although Robb was a skilled carpenter, boatbuilding (and boat repair) required a specialized set of skills. And this wasn't just any boat; it was a Herreshoff 12 1/2, a classic wooden sailboat. Restoring the sailboat was both an act of respect and an homage to a place and a way of life that are in jeopardy of disappearing.

A craftsman and environmentalist, Robb is a willing and able student, and although the restoration of the boat takes far more time and effort than he'd calculated, it is ultimately successful. After all Robb's struggles with quartersawn white oak, homemade steam boxes, bronze screws, copper rivets, andold mast hoops, the Herreshoff sails again -- and a dying art and a vanishing way of life remain alive and vibrant just a while longer.

Join us for a book signing with Daniel Robb. He will also bring the Herreshoff 12 1/2 and it will be on display.

Searching For Thoreau by Tom Slayton
AND
Just Seconds From The Ocean: Coastal Living In The Wake Of Katrina by William Sargent
Book Signing
Friday June 27th . 4-5pm

June is a wonderful time to be thinking about nature. We have two noted authors who will share their new books with you:

William Sargent will sign Just Seconds From The Ocean: Coastal Living In The Wake of Katrina ($24.95).
The idea of living on the coast conjures images of rolling waves, rocky outcroppings, and sandy stretches of beach. This picturesque conception stands in direct contrast to the reality of the natural world. In Just Seconds from the Ocean: Coastal Living in the Wake of Katrina, William Sargent examines the real potential for catastrophe in these seemingly idyllic locations and how coastal dwellers perch precariously on the edge of disaster.

Tom Slayton will sign Searching For Thoreau ($18.95). Searching for Thoreau vividly transports the reader to the places in New England that were most important to the great American writer/naturalist Henry David Thoreau in 10 vigorous essays that range from Walden Pond to the shores of Cape Cod and the heights of Mount Katahdin in northern Maine. The author, Tom Slayton, recounts his first-hand experiences comparing them to Thoreau s from 150 years earlier; he also compares their observations on the places themselves and their reflections on the causes of change, all with ample use of excerpts from Thoreau s writings. Tom was the editor-in-chief of Vermont Life Magazine and is a long time commentator at Vermont Public Radio.
