On Thursday, July 6th at 6:30-8:00 pm, Titcomb’s Bookshop and
The Sandwich Library, will host a special family event at the Sandwich
Town Hall, featuring Deputy Police Chief Steve Xiarhos of Yarmouth, and Curtis Frye III of Mashpee.

Deputy Steve Xiarhos, who founded the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund in honor of his son, will speak about honoring our veterans and the importance of giving back to the community.

Curtis Frye III, who will be accompanied by his service dog Nick, named in honor of Steve’s son, will discuss the role of a service dog and how they can change the quality of life for a veteran.

Steve and Curtis are an integral part of a new children’s book called MAX AND CHARLIE HELP A HERO.  This book, by Kim Roderiques and K.M. Ginter, is based on real life characters who made a difference in their community on Cape Cod and Nantucket. The book is bound to delight children with its intrepid band of characters which are prominently overlaid on photographs of scenic landmarks on Cape Cod and Nantucket.  Roderiques explains, “The story conveys a powerful message about patriotism and service to others, stressing: you are never too young to give back.”  An example of this message is cited in the book about a boy and his friends on Nantucket who raised $30,000 last summer to have a service dog trained for a veteran.

This promises to be a moving presentation with two amazing guest speakers!

A portion of the proceeds of the book will go toward the MSPCA of Cape Cod, Nantucket Holidays for Heroes and the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund, founded after the 2009 death of Xiarhos in Afghanistan. He was the son of Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Stephen Xiarhos, and the fund is used in part for scholarship money for future members of the armed forces.
